Is 4K Content Available?

It doesn’t help to have a 4K display unless there’s content available. And the concern is a legitimate one since the first HDTVs came out in 1998 but the switch to HD broadcasting didn’t take affect for over a decade after that (June, 2009). So are things going to be the same with 4K Ultra-High Definition (UHD) content? The good news is that the first 4K displays came out over a decade ago, so the content is catching up right now. 4K Streaming As of the middle of 2015 the two biggest players in video streaming (Netflix and YouTube) have 4K content to stream (provided your internet connection is fast enough). Additionally Amazon’s instant video More…

If Your Walls Could Talk, They Would Ask for Planar

Dear designer, First off, thank you for building me.  I like to think that I am an exceptionally beautiful and functional wall and I am delighted to be a part of your space.  I think we will have a long lifetime of collaboration. I have noticed, however, that I am a bit plain.  Sure, there is a framed print hanging near the window and I like the shade of gray that you picked for paint, and I don’t want to sound ungrateful for the little adornment.  But we could do more.  I could be more. I have been comparing notes with other walls and it seems that there are lots of great options for facing me with a video walls.  Something that would bring me to More…

When does 4K Resolution Matter?

You’ve probably heard a lot about 4K displays, but you might not know exactly what they are or why it’s important. The short answer is that 4K displays have approximately four thousand lines of vertical resolution (compared to approximately two thousand for HD displays). But what does it actually accomplish when more pixels are packed into the same amount of space? Resolution, PPI, and VisionThe three things that make a difference in how you see an image or video on a screen are the resolution of the screen, the number of pixels in each inch on that screen, and your eyes. All of them affect your experience of the display in different More…

Every Business is a Digital Business

The global consulting firm, Accenture, has just published the 2015 version of its annual Technology Vision and it is interesting to see how the trends they forecast are affecting our Planar’s customers today. SMAC: Social, Mobile, Analytics, and Cloud The move to unstructured data, direct-to-consumer connections, and extensive record-keeping throughout the transaction processes of our lives form a foundation of many of these trends. We are seeing this very strongly in the use of large format video walls and high resolution displays being deployed in monitoring centers and the use of advanced visualization tools, like 3D, to explore data sets in new More…

One Part Prophecy, Two Parts Planning

Many in the design community talk about designing structures and building with resiliency in mind. In other words, thinking of the notion that future proofing and preservation go hand in hand. To design with the aim of protecting the asset over time, as it is used and reacts to the environment. In all cases, this involves an assessment of physical risk. We might not know the future, but we can plan for various contingencies. For instance, if you are designing buildings along the Miami shorefront, you will need it to survive tropic storms or perhaps a hurricane. The extent to which facilities are protected is a choice you make with each project and More…

A Display By Any Other Name

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”  – William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet.  Everyone in the display industry and in the larger A/V space has been tracking the growth of 4K or Ultra High Definition (UHD) resolution displays.  Our own award-winning Planar® UltraRes™ has entered strongly into the growing category and has won its own following with the professional features, and now the new iOS app.  And the 4K additions to the Planar® EP Series are gaining traction. But the debate rages on what to call these displays.  Most of the screens in the market today in this class of display measure 3840 by 2160 pixels, making them 4 times the More…
