The Contradiction of Creativity

There was a recent article in Advertising Age sponsored by USA Today that asked advertising executives what “Creativity” meant to them. Responses ran the gamut. Below are some examples: “Creativity is surprise and delight”“Creativity is taking existing things and recombining them in ways that are completely new and fresh.”“True creative is original, which is a very high standard.”“To me, creativity is something that sparks the imagination [about a brand] in an ingenious way.”“Creativity is leaving an old belief behind.” My sister, who is an artist, is fond of saying “creativity is messy.” And I think that gets to the heart of the mythology of More…

Headsetlessness

People love the idea of virtual reality, but may object to strapping a phone to their nose.  So, how can you get that augmented reality look without awkward (and unsanitary) headsets obscuring customers’ view of your live product? Planar® LookThru™, of course! It’s headset free. It’s available today. Content is easy to create in a standard resolution.  It’s never been easier.

The Truth about the "Wow Factor"

“Wow” is something you get once. You don’t get it the second time. Repeat visitors can get bored and tune out the thing that originally stopped them in their tracks. Every brand and retailer wants a “Wow” effect in their space. And that is less about the installation (although a large scale or uniquely shaped installation with great visual performance is critical) and more about the long-term content strategy.

Slashers

Andrew Goodwin is the editor-in-chief of Public, a new magazine focused on public interest design, was interviewed by AIA Architect magazine (January 2015) and he talked about a growing trend of cross-discipline experts. “There are a lot of what I call ‘slashers’ coming out of school now – architects/designers. You can be writers, designers, advocates, fundraisers, project managers, teachers, and architects all at the same time.” I have heard other people call them “slashies.” Those people whose talent and experience cannot be contained to a single role, thus their titles become things like… screen writer/comedian film More…

4 Reasons to Buy a 4K Display

The decision to upgrade to a 4K display might not be an easy one. It wasn’t all that long ago that things moved from standard definition to HD and now there’s another move to an even higher resolution display. Here are 4 reasons to upgrade to a 4K Ultra-High Definition (UHD) display. 1. Multiple Inputs Since 4K displays are four-times the resolution of HD screens you can use the multiple inputs on a PlanarⓇ 4K monitor to show four different feeds at full resolution on one screen. So instead of trying to piece together the inputs on four different screens or figure out how to have your video sources switch between them all, you can do everything from More…

Don't Forget the Audio

It’s a dirty little secret in the display industry; displays look better with great audio. This is illustrated powerfully in the home theater business where Runco projectors are put into acoustically-friendly rooms with fantastic audio. Film makers know it is critical for storytelling. The new generation of Planar® UltraRes™ Series displays have integrated speakers. For digital signage applications, audio is most commonly paired with touch screens to provide the ultimate interactive experience. In corporate settings, audio is often used for teleconferencing. With Planar’s 4K displays, there is advanced functionality that allows the user to show More…

Digital Displays in Employee Communications

Customer facing digital displays tend to be an easier sell than employee facing screens. For customers it’s about engagement; the more a customer engages in a positive way with a brand, the more likely they are to make a purchase – or repeated purchases. But for a business to invest in displays for employees two things need to be clear: the content and the benefit. Best practices in digital communications Displaying information to customers is a well-established field known as marketing. Using digital displays as a platform for marketing doesn’t require new thinking or new departments within a company. You might be surprised to know that neither do More…

I've Come for the Displays

Recently Phil Lenger from Show+Tell presented at a conference and said that their goal is to get their customers’ advertising to be so compelling that people want to experience them. He provocatively proposed that no one ever said “I like coming here to watch the displays.” In my experience, that is not true. Plenty of people have come to the Cowboys Stadium or the Texas Motor Speedway to experience the huge displays. The big displays are one of the main appeals of Times Square in New York. And the appeal of the new Planar® LookThru™ OLED transparent display is identifying opportunities for making the video a destination, not just something that More…
