What Makes a Quality LED Display?

An LED display’s quality is judged by a long list of marketable specifications, like perceived image performance or reliability. But it’s hard to know exactly how these specifications are being calculated when reading a specification sheet or brochure from a manufacturer. Consider this: fine pitch (or narrow pixel pitch) LED displays have been on the market for about seven years and the lifetime of an LED may be upwards of 100,000 hours, which is equal to more than 11 years. If LED displays have been sold for less than their average lifetime, how can we be assured that we are investing in quality display components? There are three key aspects to More…

What Do You Mean by LED?

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are versatile, energy efficient, and durable. It’s no surprise they’re gaining popularity among a variety of products on the market today. You might be wondering how the LED lights that you see in your kitchen light fixture can possibly be the same lights as the ones that make up your digital signage application. While both applications are referred to with “LED” in the title, the lighting technology is quite different. There are three main types of LEDs that you see in commercial products that are often confused: LED Backlight In so-called LED TVs (really a misnomer—they are LCD displays with LED backlights), the LEDs More…

Fundamentals of LED Backlights

There are two types of LED backlights (in simple terms), edge-lit and direct. EDGE LIT In an edge-lit backlight, there is a row of LED light emitters (usually white) along one, two, or three edges of a backlight with reflective films and coatings to funnel that light across the entire back of an LCD panel in a uniform manner. Advantages: Results in a thin overall LCD display profile. If you see a panel that is very, very thin, most likely it is using an edge-lit backlight design. It is lower cost since it uses less LEDs to cover a larger area of display. Disadvantages: Can have some brightness uniformity issues, creating bright edges of More…

What is an LED?

LED stands for “light emitting diode” and it is a semiconductor device that converts an electrical current to visible light. It is a self-emitting light source. Because of its relative power efficiency, solid-state design, and long life-span it is a popular building material for a number of product categories: LED architectural lighting, replacing incandescent or fluorescent bulbs in light fixtures both indoor and outdoor. These LEDs are structured to emit white light. LED backlights used in LCD (liquid crystal displays) and video walls as a light source, replacing cold cathode fluorescent lights (CCFL) in flat panel displays and monitors. In More…

Alternatives to a Touch Overlay

Our customers love interactive displays. Over the years, touchscreens and multi-touch displays have become a huge part of our product offering and with no surprise. Interactivity encourages customer engagement, brand loyalty, and brings a livelihood to physical spaces, all with a natural user interface. Customers and integrators may think their only path to interactivity on a video wall or large format display is a third-party touch overlay. Something that could transform their LCD or LED display to an interactive touch screen. But there is an alternative. Leyard (use the company name based on the site) offers a wide variety of products with touch More…

What is Digital Signage?

This week, I spoke at the Digital Signage Federation and Digital Signage Expo sponsored panel discussion called “Coffee and Controversy” and one of the questions posed to the panel was whether the name “digital signage” was a benefit or hindrance to the industry. The term has been used by market researchers to describe the kinds of screens that are used in public venues, versus residential, consumer or television products. The term “digital signage” being used as a synonym with “public information displays.” The term has been a catchall for a variety of technologies, ranging from displays to players to content creation for applications ranging from More…

Strong Enough to Lift a Car

Superheroes from comics, movies, or television shows are often lauded for their strength. The ability to lift a car being a quintessential demonstration. And it turns out that people want display products, especially in the rental and staging market, that are incredibly strong. Superhero strong.
